PMI MELBOURNE August 99 |
Back to Home | Newsletter
Welcome to the third edition of the PMI Melbourne Chapter Newsletter for 1999. The last two months have seen our president on a well-earned vacation in Europe we look forward to Chriss return mid August.
The events sub-committee has been hard at work providing much of the public face of the chapter the calendar for the rest of the year is creative. We have been able to combine several of our functions with AIPM in order to attract some more interesting speakers and this is the beginning of building a good relationship between the two organisations. Our most recent event with Dr. Sauer from AGSM was attended by over 70 people from both groups and was a very interesting evening, judging by the queue in front of Dr. Sauer long after his presentation had ended. Our next event with Kevin Sheedy puts project management in yet another light and is already proving to be quite a sell out evening.
As we move towards the end of the year and election time again, those of you wishing to become more involved in the chapter either on the board or in a sub-committee, might want to consider volunteering some time to contribute to the project management profession. Please contact any member of the board if you would like more information.
A big thank you must again be extended to IBM GSA, Shell Services International, and Ajilon Australia for the continuing use of their facilities for events, professional development courses and PMP exams.
For those of you planning to sit the PMP exam in November, see our exciting new offering of study groups. This has been particularly successful in New Zealand and is a welcome addition to the services that the Melbourne Chapter provide to our members. Also take advantage of our courses and preparation sessions, and the best of luck!

The Chapter is looking in to setting up a Study Group. The aim of the Study Group is to provide a forum for those sitting the exam to assist each other. Outside of the benefit of not studying in isolation, the group will offer a regular chance to hear from project managers from varied backgrounds and industry groups.
The proposed approach is to get together on a weekly basis for around an hour over a 12-week period. This would allow time for the group to start in September and be ready for the November exam.
Meetings would be informal and could be at either a work venue after work or over a breakfast on weekends. Some structure would be provided by a scene setting session and then working through the PMBOK. The intention would be to get some input from existing PMPs and use some of the ideas from other study groups.
If you are interested in being part of a Study Group contact Brendon Gray on 9601 9059 or 0417-525-904. Email: :bgray@vtnecss1.telstra.com.au.

"The PMI Project Management Standards Program Member Advisory
Group and I have selected Ken Hudacsko to serve as project manager of the Project
Management Principles Project. This project was initiated last year and created an array
of useful discussion among the participants. The project is now ready for renewed focus
toward bringing the project to completion and creating a PMI Standard.
In order to ensure that the project team reflects properly upon the breadth and depth of diversity that resides within the PMI membership, Ken, the Standards Member Advisory Group and I want your assistance. We wish to solicit volunteers from who would be interested and willing to work on the project.
We are looking for people who can do high-level strategic thinking, who can communicate simply about complex subjects, who have good team-working skills and can be open minded about the subject matter. With regard to procedures, participants are asked to:
v
carefully read and accept the project charterv
review PMI's Standards Setting Policy and Procedurev
complete and submit a PMI Volunteer Application Formv
complete, sign and submit a PMI Project Volunteer Copyright Assignmentv
be prepared to volunteer an average of 5-10 hours per month for the duration of what may be a two-year project. The project charter, standards setting process, copyright assignment and volunteer application form are posted in the Standards Section of the PMI Web Site at http://www.pmi.org/standards. From a practical application view, we need volunteers who can converse in English and who have Internet e-mail capability. Your assistance by the middle of August would be appreciated. Thank you."

More unsolicited feedback on our events program thanks Paul!
"Dear Michele
The recent (Dr Chris Sauer PM in Construction and IT Event on 5 August) joint PMI/AIPM session was very good and we commend you for running such a well presented and catered for session. It is very good to see both Institutes getting together as a team. Let's hope there will be much more of it.
I was recently at a sportsman's night at an Amateur club where (Kevin Sheedy spoke) and Kevin impressed me as one of the best candid speakers I have ever seen. So I am sure your attendees will be in for a good evening on 7 September and I thank you in anticipation."
